We made a spontaneous decision to jump in the car and head out of town on Thursday! The thunderstorms had ruined our plans for the evening and what we decided to do instead was head for New Mexico. Planning to visit Carlsbad Caverns, we drove to Roswell and stayed there for the night.
When the kids began asking about the alien paintings and signs around Roswell, we told them about the alledged alien crashsite from the 1940's and the kids were immediately enthralled. They wanted to see some
aliens! We decided we would stop back by Roswell and see what we could find on aliens after our visit to the caverns.

We rose early, which is no easy feat with this bunch, and arrived at Carlsbad Caverns shortly after the gates opened. The rangers gave us the rules, which included using a whisper voice while in the cave because your normal voice will carry over a mile. Our boys either didn't hear this rule or decided to test it out, because I think upon entering the caverns, we because that annoying family with the obnoxiously loud kids that you just can't seem to get away from. We hushed them repeatedly as we hiked over 2 miles through the caves. The boys oohed and awed at the huge r
ooms and interesting rock formations. It was a quite a hike too! Braden begged piggy back rides from Dustin and Derik the last 30 minutes. By lunch time, we had completed the two self-guided paths and headed back to the surface for lunch.
We pointed our car back towards Roswell and the kids talked about aliens all the way there. We found a shop called Alien Zone, which deals in all things alien. It also has a pay-to-enter backroom that the kids couldn't wait to get into. They had a blast checking out all the alien sets and playing around.
It was a fast and furious adventure that they will hopefully remember! And the first of many for this summer!
